Frozen pipe that is now in need of plumbing repair

Homeowners: Beware of Frozen Pipes This Winter

While some frozen pipes may only create inconveniences, they can also lead to serious damage to your property. Because of this, it’s important to understand the dangers of frozen pipes.

Lack of running water is the most common problem when pipes freeze. This can not only be an inconvenience, but can also lead to backup of running water, which can lead to burst pipes, flooding, and water damage. The second most common problem with frozen pipes is burst pipes. This happens when the water inside the pipe freezes, creating pressure between the closed faucet and the frozen water that can cause the pipe to explode.

Unfortunately, there are some pipes that are more susceptible to freezing than others. First, pipes in southern climates that aren’t exposed to cold temperatures often are more vulnerable to freezing due to the lack of insulation surrounding the pipes. Second, pipes located in basements or attics may freeze easier since they don’t receive the same amount of heat as the rest of the home. In fact, about 37% of frozen pipe problems occur inside the basement of a home. And lastly, pipes in the exterior walls of a home may freeze easier due to inadequate amount of insulation.

In order to prevent damages to your plumbing, it’s important to be aware of the common signs that you have frozen pipes in your home. Here are a few indications that tell you if you have frozen pipes:

  • Frost:For visible pipes, you may be able to see that frost has gathered on the outside of the pipe. This is a good way to tell that the pipe might be frozen before you even turn on the water.
  • No Water:While lack of water flow can be caused by a number of things, like a faulty faucet or drainage system, another cause may be frozen pipes. It’s important to not keep trying to turn the water on in order to avoid furthering the frozen blockage within the pipes.
  • Unfamiliar Smells:If a pipe is partially or completely blocked, you may notice a strange smell coming from the drain or faucet. This may occur because if the pipe is blocked, the only option the smell has is to escape back up in the direction of your home.

If you notice any signs of frozen pipes this winter, it’s important to contact a plumbing service right away. Since a frozen pipe has the potential to burst and flood your home, it’s crucial that a plumber takes care of thawing the pipes before they cause any damages.
